South Tarawa Renewable Energy Project (STREP) background information

The South Tarawa Renewable Energy Project (STREP), implemented by the Public Utilities Board (PUB) across Phase 1 and Phase 2, represents a major advancement in Kiribati’s sustainable development by harnessing abundant solar energy to reduce reliance on imported fossil fuels and strengthen energy resilience. Phase 1 established the foundation through the installation of modern solar photovoltaic systems and key infrastructure upgrades, while Phase 2 expands this progress with increased renewable capacity, advanced battery storage, floating solar PV systems, new overhead transmission lines, and the introduction of an electric vehicle network. Together, these efforts ensure a more reliable power supply, support the local economy, promote cleaner transportation, and drive South Tarawa toward a greener, climate-resilient future.
