Your Prepaid Meters

PUB is currently rolling out it's Prepaid meters on South Tarawa.

We currently offer 2 types for our Customers.

We have the 3 phase prepaid meters and the single phase prepaid meters.

Single Phase prepaid CIU
This is the single phase CIU or Customer Interface Unit which communicates with your the main meter at the Distribution Box. This CIU is where you can view your existing energy readings. Note the codes on the CIU. This is normally installed right next to your switchboard.

3 phase prepaid meter

The 3 phase prepaid meters are for our larger industrial customers or those who have been advised to use this meter. It's CIU is intergrated onto the meter.

How Will the Transition Work?

Installation: PUB will replace postpaid meters with prepaid meters at no extra cost to customers. Notifications will be sent out ahead of your scheduled installation date.

Customer Training: Free workshops and guides will be provided on how to use the new prepaid system.

How to use my prepayment meter after it is installed?

After the meter is installed for you, a meter identification card will be handed over to you, on which the meter serial number is printed. Please keep it safe

The meter serial number is utmost important to top up your meter.

If the meter identification card is lost, input short code 36 + on the keypad of your CIU to retrieve the meter serial number and write it down for future meter top up.

How to top up my meter?

STEP 1: Always check your meter display regularly to see how much credit is left on your meter to avoid power supply suspension

STEP 2: Bring you meter ID to PUB when purchasing a credit. A credit token of 20-digits will be generated and handed over to you. Credits are not interchangeable.

STEP 3: Bring back the credit voucher and input the 20-digits token on the keypad of the CIU. The credit is loaded on the meter upon the key-in completion.

Why my CIU is not working?

Can not light up?

The CIU is powered with two options - AC power supply by the power network, and DC power supply by battery. So please make sure that the CIU is properly powered by either. Check the LCD of the CIU can be light up or not without plugging it into any power socket. If it fails to light up, please insert the batteries or replace the old batteries.

Can not communicate to the meter?

The CIU communicates to the meter with PLC (Power Line Carrier) communication. It must be plug into any power sockets in your home. When the power supply is disconnected, please make sure the CIU is properly powered by batteries, and remain plugged to the socket.

Can not load token to my meter?

The CIU is logically paired to your meter specifically with an engineering code. Please make sure your CIU is properly paired to your meter and using your own CIU only. Please do not use your neighbour’s CIU to load credit to your meter
